Biography

Dominique J. Wiener, DVM, PhD, DECVP

I grew up in Bern, Switzerland, where I also went to vet school and afterwards did my thesis and PhD on the canine distemper virus. I also successfully completed my residency in veterinary pathology at the Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Bern, and got my diploma as a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathology in 2011. I was very lucky that I could learn from Dr. Monika Welle, a well-known specialist in dermatopathology, and I could constantly extend my knowledge in the pathology of the skin.

From 2018–2025, I worked as a Clinical Associate Professor at Texas A&M University, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, serving as the director of the Dermatopathology Specialty Service from 2021–2025. My research focuses on understanding the pathogenesis of non-inflammatory alopecia in dogs, and I use keratinocytic organoids (keratinocytoids) as a tool to investigate the pathogenesis of various skin diseases. My husband and I returned to Switzerland in 2025, though I continue to work in diagnostic dermatopathology. I consult with the Texas A&M Dermatopathology Specialty Service and participate in hosting biweekly dermatopathology rounds with pathologists, dermatologists, and residents.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved all animals, and I am very happy that my profession gives me the opportunity to help animals and animal owners on a daily basis.
